Slaves of Gold and Silver

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, May the slaves of Dinars, Dirhams and sheets be destroyed, if they are given these things they are pleased and if they are not given they are displeased, may he be humiliated and fall on his head, when he is pricked by a thorn it shouldn’t be taken out. Fortunate is that person who grips the reigns of his horse going out to fight in the path of Allah, (in a condition that  his hair is dishevelled, his feet are full of dust, if he is appointed to serve as security he does so, if he is placed behind the army then he obeys, if he seeks permission to attend the gatherings of people he is refused, if he intercedes on behalf of someone his intercession is not accepted. (Bukhari)

A servant of dinars (gold coins) refers to a person that befriends or loves the humiliated wealth of the world which makes one negligent of the hereafter. On the other hand, if a person possesses wealth but he is not engulfed by the love of his wealth then it is not detested. In this Hadith specific mention is made of dirhams and dinars as these are such currencies by which every evil desire can be fulfilled. The word ‘Khamisa” in the Hadith refers to a black sheet which is striped; this sheet has been mentioned as it creates pride in a person. One is referred to as a servant of these things as one is totally inclined to such things and in love with these things to such an extent that he is unable to separate from it, thus it is as though he has become a slave of these things. (Mazaahir-e-Haq)
