Do not wait for tomorrow

Hadrat Abu Huraira Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam  is reported to have said, You are awaiting wealth that makes you rebellious or you are awaiting poverty that will cause you to forget Allah Ta'ala (not appreciating one’s wealth and destroying it is like waiting for poverty), or you are awaiting sickness (because of not appreciating one’s health) which will destroy your body, or you are awaiting old age which will cause you to lose your senses or you are awaiting death which will appear suddenly, or you are awaiting the Dajjal who is evil and absent, or you are awaiting Qiyaamah which is difficult and most bitter. (Tirmidhi/ Nasaai’ee)

In awaiting these things and in the promises of today a person becomes negligent in his preparation of the hereafter. Therefore Hadrat Thanvi R.A. mentions, “Do not wait for peace and tranquillity in order to make Zikrullah and obey Allah Ta'ala.” Remember Allah Ta'ala irrespective of the condition that you are experiencing as you will attain peace of mind in the remembrance of Allah. You have withheld the remembrance of Allah Ta'ala emancipating peace and tranquillity. How foolish isn’t it? The remembrance of Allah Ta'ala is beneficial in all cases whether the heart is distracted or not.

Hadrat Gangohi R.A. states that Zikrullah is beneficial whether carried out with peace of mind or not. Maulana Rumi R.A. states that the grief of the past and the fear of the future causes the Saalik (one treading the path of Tasawwuf) to be deprived. Hadrat Thanvi r has explained this by saying that by repenting once of the past sins one should not continue remembering them. The servant has been created to remember Allah Ta'ala. Similarly, having fear of the future that if I do get involved in the same sin again, what is the benefit of this Taubah? These types of things are an obstacle in reaching Allah Ta'ala.

It is sufficient to make a firm intention not to sin in future. If perchance one does fall into sin again then the road of repentance is open. In conclusion, one should not wait to see what the future holds in store? One should spend the currents moments of his life in good deeds and abstain from sin. Correct yourself and do not delay today’s work for tomorrow.

To delay one’s actions for the next day contradicts the correct way (i.e. the way of Allah Ta'ala). The solution to these problems has been mentioned in the Hadith. Some people are paupers. These people are emancipating wealth and therefore do not occupy themselves in deeds of the hereafter. Those that are wealthy are awaiting poverty (by spending their wealth in acts of sin and futile activities whereas this wealth can be used to make provisions for their hereafter.” Similarly, good health can be wasted in disobedience and negligence. This is similar to waiting for sickness to carry out good deeds. Similarly, they are destroying their youth and awaiting old age, and they are wasting their life waiting for death. The remainder of the Hadith can be understood in the same manner as explained above. We are being made alert of procrastinating so that the veil of negligence can be removed.
