The value of Dunya

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam passed by a market place where he entered from the upper end, and the Sahaaba had surrounded him, he passed by a dead goat whose ears were small in size/cut which he grabbed holding it by its ears and said, “Would any one of you like this animal in lieu of a Dirham (silver coin)? They replied, “We would not even take it for any price, what will we do with such an animal?” He then said, “Would you like it for yourselves?”  They said, “By Allah, if it was living it was defective as the ears were short or cut off, what will be the condition whilst it is dead?” Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “ByAllah! The Dunya is more disgraced to Allah Ta’ala than this (goat) is to you.”

The purpose of this Hadith is to disincline a person from the world and incline one towards the Aakhirah, as the love of the world is the root of all evil, and abandoning the love of the world is the root to all Ibaadat. If a lover of the world is involved in works of Deen then too his objective is corrupt. On the other hand, if a person is disinclined towards the world but is involved in worldly matters then too his objective will be the Aakhirat.

Some mystics have said, “If one has befriended the world then no spiritual guide will be able to guide such a person, and a corrupt person cannot misguide one who has removed the love of Dunya from his heart.”
