Sufficient Sustenance

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال  : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم ( اللهم ارزق آل محمد قوتا

Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “O Allah, grant the family of Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that amount of sustenance that allow them to survive and provide energy the body.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had the complete knowledge of the worldly life and the harms of the Dunya, therefore he asked for that amount of Dunya which would merely suffice. May Allah Ta’ala show us the useless position of the Dunya in light of the teachings of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and grant us the ability to act accordingly.

The author of Mazahirul Haq has written that the family of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam refers to the Ahle-Bait (immediate family of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) or it could refer to those that follow his path or a genuine friend. The second meaning has been preferred.

The word “Kafaaf” which is mentioned in some narrations means that he should acquire that amount of sustenance that makes him independent of asking others.

Other commentators are of the opinion that the words “Kafaaf” and “Qootah” are synonyms. Ulema have written to possess sustenance according to one’s need is superior than poverty and that wealth which is not a means of misguidance and extravagance but it is a means of piety and worship of Allah Ta’ala then the virtue of such wealth is different.

In conclusion, Dunya is only required according to necessity. The definition of necessity in the words of Hadrat Thanvi Rahmatullah-e-Alayh is, “A person will suffer loss either in the world or Aakhirat by not having that item.”
