In this world many people are born and then leave the world. After their demise even their names no longer remain. However, there are certain beloved servants of Allah Ta'ala that come into this world, rule over the hearts of the general and special people and then depart. These people are beloved to Allah Ta'ala and beloved to the servants of Allah Ta'ala. Their work entails correcting the fundamental beliefs of the people, seeing to the well-being and success of the general masses, inviting to the oneness of Allah Ta'ala, establishing the truth and destroying falsehood. As their intention is universal therefore the effect of their effort is also universal, and such a person (involved in this effort) becomes a universal personality. Due to this it is mentioned, “The death of an Alim is actually the death of the universe.” When an Alim of Deen leaves the world then the people of the world become orphans (due to the loss).
Aarif Billah Hadrat Maulana Hakim Muhammad Akhtar Saheb R.A has left us and become the beloved of Allah Ta'ala. This is as though the Alim has left the world as orphans. Allah Ta'ala had blessed Hadrat Maulana with a very high position, through Hadrat a lengthy chain of righteousness and guidance was established. Hadrat R.A. was a personality that would remind one of the Akaabireen (pious predecessors). Due to Hadrat’s demise the Ummat has suffered such a loss that is irreparable. Hadrat R.A was a rain of mercy for the Ummat.
As a Nabie conquers the hearts of the human beings and then instils the greatness of Allah Ta'ala in such hearts, similarly a Wali also subjugates the hearts of human beings by the grace and mercy of Allah Ta'ala and then fills the love of Allah Ta'ala in their hearts. I am merely a student thus where can I ever explain the position of Hadrat R.A. A personality that was an Alim of Deen, a great scholar, a friend of Allah Ta'ala, a guide, an outstanding Sheikh of Tasawwuf, one who had recognised Allah Ta'ala and one who invites towards Allah Ta'ala. The task of explaining the position of such a personality can only be done by the Ulema, the Awliya (friends of Allah c), and the chosen servants of Allah Ta'ala. Hadrat R.A. had unlimited followers and by the grace and mercy of Allah Ta'ala I am also one of his followers. Now I contemplate and think to myself that Allah Ta'ala was so kind to me that I had the good fortune of spending time in the companionship of Hadrat R.A. No matter how much of gratitude I express, it is insufficient.
The reality is this that the example of Hadrat was like that of a huge tree providing plenty of shade under which many people had spent time with ease and comfort. The manner in which the gatherings of Zikr, spiritual discourses, lectures, lessons of Tasawwuf were conducted would remind one of the great luminaries of the first century. By taking part in such gatherings the hardest of hearts would become soft like candle wax. By keeping the lectures, discourses and advices of Hadrat in front of us, one would conclude that The One Who decrees faith (Allah Ta'ala) had chosen Hadrat specifically for the guidance of human beings. Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Knowledge will be lifted from this world in this manner that the people of knowledge will leave the world.”
This is a sign of the closeness of Qiyaamah that the honourable Ulema, senior Mashaaikh, and the friends of Allah Ta'ala will depart. The vacuum that has been created due to the demise of Hadrat cannot be filled in centuries to come. Not only did the associates, followers and disciples of Hadrat become orphans by the loss of Hadrat rather the entire Ummat has become orphans. Such personalities are not born daily.
The Narcissus weeps over its dullness, with great difficulty a person with an eye is born in a flower garden.
Hadrat R.A was a great bearer of Sunnat and Tauheed and he was a unsheated sword in eradicating Shirk (polytheism) and Bid’aat (innovations). Allah Ta'ala had filled him with castles of humility, humbleness, tolerance, Taqwa and sincerity. Many people involved in various problems and depression would attend the Khanqah and would quench the thirst of their hearts in a satisfactory manner and would return happily. Some people would come in a state of restlessness and helplessness, or extremely tired after undertaking a lengthy journey but would return with great ease and comfort. Many would visit the Khanqah with broken hearts yet Hadrat would join those hearts. Hadrat R.A was an expert doctor and specialist to treat spiritual sicknesses. He was a practising Alim, a Sufi that had attained internal purification, a person filled with love, a true lover of Allah and His Rasul Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam, a propagator of the pure knowledge of Quraan and Hadith and a great inviter towards Allah Ta'ala. Due to his demise the entire garden is now lonely.
Due to his separation from this world the entire season has changed, one person has left the entire town in ruins.
Due to your demise the heart is grieved, the liver is about to tear apart, tears are flowing from the eyes, as the small world has been deprived of such a great personality. The presence of Hadrat was a great gift and without doubt he was a great asset that possessed great intelligence. Hadrat was an individual that was equivalent to an assembly. Those that are to depart leave but those that remain behind suffer the harm. Allah c had made pure souls such as Hadrat a door to prevent all Fitna. When these people depart then these doors are destroyed and new Fitnas are placed onto the head because of which weak people like us are involved in difficulty. To add to this, there isn’t any other servant whose Duas are readily accepted in the court of Allah Ta'ala. If you cannot get Duas accepted due to you’re A’maal then at least one can gain dominance over falsehood by their Duas. These are the challenges we are faced with on the demise of these great friends of Allah Ta'ala.
Having love is destruction from the hand to the head, in the desert there isn’t any wall whatsoever.
When we used to present ourselves before Hadrat, listen to his discourses, then great realities would open up before us. Hadrat has dedicated his life in correcting people from spiritual ailments, and many people were cured from their ailments in the Khanqah. The crux of his lectures were as follows, the word human being merely refers to the outward form of a person. The actual jewel is the internal of a person which is called the heart and soul. It is mentioned in a hadith Sharif that the external success and failure of a human being is totally dependent on the internal success and failure of a person. He used to say, “Just as the external body is sometimes healthy and sometimes sick and to maintain good health one ensures that he takes the correct nourishment and medication to treat his sicknesses, similarly in order to maintain a healthy internal condition one has to recognise His creator, make Zikr, be grateful to Him and obey all His commands at all times. The internal sickness of a person is being negligent of the remembrance of Allah Ta'ala and contradicting his command. Other forms of internal maladies include Kufr, Shirk, Nifaaq (hypocrisy), Hasad (jealousy), malice, pride, pomp and glory, greed, love of wealth and fame. The internal health of a person can be achieved by recognising Allah Ta'ala, realising that all forms of harm and benefit is only from Allah Ta'ala, be grateful over His bounties, be patient if you are afflicted with any form of hardship, place your trust upon Allah Ta'ala, have hope in His mercy, fear His Azaab, be concerned of pleasing Him, and with truthfulness, trustworthiness, and sincerity obey all His commands.
In the Quraan Sharif Allah Ta'ala states,
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاء وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
We reveal from the Quraan that which is cure and mercy for the believers.
قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاء
Say (O Muhammad S.A.W), this Quraan is guidance and cure for people of Imaan
However, the great difference in spiritual sicknesses and their cure is that external sicknesses can be sensed with the eyes and other senses such as feeling the pulse of a person and testing the urine of a person, etc. Therefore the cure to these sicknesses can only be carried out with medical instruments and medication that is tangible. The spiritual sicknesses cannot be seen with the naked eye, nor can they be felt by feeling the pulse of a person, etc. therefore spiritual sicknesses cannot be treated by medication and various forms of nourishment. These sicknesses can only be diagnosed and treated by the principles mentioned in the Quraan and Hadith.
In the Quraan-e-Kareem Allah Ta'ala has mentioned the complete and detailed method of rectifying one’s outward actions, dealings, internal beliefs, character. From the era of the Sahaaba and Tabi’een up to the pious people of our current times, whatever perfection has been achieved was as a result of acting upon this system. Just as these personalities were punctual with their Salaah, fasting, Haj, Zakaat, etc. they had attained perfection in their internal actions such as truthfulness, sincerity, Tauheed (believing in the oneness of Allah Ta'ala), humbleness, patience, gratitude, placing their reliance upon Allah Ta'ala, abstinence, etc. Just as they had abstained from sins such as speaking lies, deception, stealing, immorality, etc. similarly they regarded the internal sins as Haraam as well and abstained from it such as pride, looking down upon others, love for name and fame, love for material wealth, greed, hatred, malice, etc.
The Ulema of the Ummat have studied the Quraan and Hadith, separated the contents into different topics and recorded it. The outward action such as Salaah, fasting, Zakaat, Nikah, Talaaq, etc. fall into the category of Fiqh. Regarding the internal actions, the beliefs of a person fall in the category of Aqaaid, issues pertaining to character and social dealings have been gathered in the category of Tasawwuf. However for a lengthy duration of time due to the negligence of most of the Muslims, they have no share or part in these things specifically in this last topic mentioned which is connected with the internal purification of a person. This part of Deen has been left out to such an extent that leave alone the Awaam (general masses) even a large group of the Ulema have also disassociated themselves from this branch of Deen. Due to this many forms of evil have been created. Perhaps people have only regarded outward actions as complete Deen. Truthfulness, sincerity, Tauheed, placing one’s reliance on Allah Ta'ala, patience, gratitude, Taqwa, abstinence, are only words that are on the lips of people. The concern of protecting oneself from disastrous diseases such as the love for name and fame, love for wealth, pride, anger, malice, jealousy, has been completely deleted from our hearts.
The current situation is that we have made our external form according to Shariat to some extent. We are also to some extent punctual with our external A’maal so that we do not loose respect in the eyes of the people. We also try and abstain from those sins which the public regarded as evil for the Ulema to be involved in. However, we are not concerned of protecting ourselves from internal sins which are much more dangerous than external sins and due to this our condition is worthy of grief. On this we should question ourselves, if due to the fear of Allah Ta'ala we are punctual with our Salaah and fasting and abstaining from stealing, evil conduct, interest bearing transactions, luxurious lifestyles, dancing, musical songs, entertainment, etc. then why do we conceal ourselves from others and involve in such sins that Shaytaan will also be ashamed of. Why isn’t the fear of Allah Ta'ala and the concern of Aakhirah in front of us? Is it not such that we have adopted outward piety to merely show people and we are abstaining from sins due to which our leadership and lecturing cannot be blamed, whereas those sins that can be concealed from the public are carried out with great bravery? This is the reason that our lectures have no effect whatsoever. The cure to these internal sicknesses are found in the Khanqahs of the friends of Allah Ta'ala. Due to their companionship, fear of Allah Ta'ala, Taqwa, abstention (from sin), sincerity and truthfulness is created.
Hadrat was amongst those that would make Zikr of Allah Ta'ala. He would remember Allah Ta'ala in all conditions. Such people have been termed as intelligent ones in the Quraan-e-Kareem as well (i.e. those that remember Allah Ta'ala whilst standing, sitting, whilst lying on their sides, and contemplate in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and naturally call out, “O Allah! You haven’t created all this without any purpose but everything has a purpose behind it. You have made the world a place of examination and the real life is the life of the hereafter, therefore protect us from the fire of the hereafter.”
The brains of a person falls into two categories.
- Aqle Ma’aad :- That brain that is used for the Aakhirat.
- Aqle Ma’aash :- That brain that is used to acquire the material gains of the world by inventing new things etc.
Generally people regard the people that use their intelligence to acquire the worldly possession as intelligent whereas the actual thing is Aql-e-Ma’aad which is used to prepare for the hereafter. The Kuffar have also been blessed with the intelligence to acquire the material gains of the world.
The person that has been blessed with the Zikr of Allah Ta'ala has been blessed with the friendship of Allah Ta'ala and the constitution for the love of Allah Ta'ala. If a person doesn’t involve in the Zikr of Allah, then such a person is termed as “Ghaafil”. Shaytaan plays with such a person just as a soccer player plays with a ball. Negligence is removed by the Zikr of Allah c and a person has a natural disinclination towards futile and useless activities. A person that commences with Zikr eventually becomes habitual of Zikr to such an extent that Zikr becomes his temperament and he is unable to miss his Zikr even if he desires to do so. Zikrullah becomes the temperament, life, nourishment of a person without which one cannot survive. The Zikr of Allah Ta'ala used to take place in the Khanqah of Hadrat R.A due to which the dead hearts would be revived. By remaining in the company of the pious the dead hearts are revived, the sick hearts become healthy, negligence is removed from the negligent ones, love for the pious and hatred for sin is created. Shaytaan does not allow each one to get involved in one particular sin but Shaytaan causes each one to sin according to his position. For example, he will cause the Ulema and pious to get involved in sicknesses such as jealousy, hatred, malice, backbiting, love for name and fame, love for wealth, etc. He will get women involved in fashion and cause them to expose themselves (i.e. not adhere to the rules of Purda). He disturbs the minds of students and worries them in regards to their earning and income after completion of their studies (i.e. how will you acquire provisions and sustain yourself). Through the blessings of Zikrullah and by remaining in the company of the friends of Allah R.A, those involved in such sicknesses will be cured by the grace and mercy of Allah Ta'ala. These people now place their trust upon Allah Ta'ala and their inferiority complex is removed. They are now able to taste the sweetness of Imaan and Islam. Just as a pearl is unaware of its value whilst it is concealed in the filthy oyster, similarly the reciter of the Kalimah is unaware of his true value. The reality opens up in the company of the friends of Allah Ta'ala. Nowadays our students and Ulema are well versed in regards to various subjects, but they are unable to construct a building of knowledge with their knowledge. The building of Deen can never be constructed without purification of the heart. To gather a thousand bricks is something else and to put up a building with these thousand bricks is something else. A person learns this formula by remaining in the company of the friends of Allah. Due to the males listening to the discourses of the friends of Allah Ta'ala, it results in the females also changing their lives. Many westernised women have changed their lives by listening to the discourses of the friends of Allah Ta'ala.The quality of chastity, good character, punctuality with Salaah, regarding the laws of Quraan and Sunnat as a favour, and fear of Allah Ta'ala is created within a person. Due to the inflaming lectures of Hadrat countless people were guided.
We beseech Allah Ta'ala to elevate the status of this beloved servant and accept his great service for Deen, make his grave a garden of Jannat, grant his successors the ability to fulfil their duties and tasks, and may Allah Ta'ala grant me Sabr together with all Hadrat’s followers and make us followers of the Sunnat in the correct manner, grant us the Taufeeq of leading a life according to Quraan and Sunnat. Ameen Ya Rabbal Aalameen!
