2 Duaas when leaving the home

1.

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ .

In the name of Allâh, I rely on Allâh. There is no protection (against evil) and no power (to do good) except with the help of Allâh.(Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)

By reciting this duâ, the angels proclaim, “You have been guided, your needs will be sufficed for, you have been protected,” and the devils go far away from him.

Another narration adds the following, “One Shaytaan says to the other, ‘How can you overpower a person who has been guided, sufficed and protected

I place my trust in Allaah…’ means that I hand over my matters to Allah Ta’ala and turn to him in all conditions.

Regarding the meaning of ‘there is no power and might except with Allah, Ibn Masood Radhiyallahu anhu narrates, “ I was with Rasulullah (SallAllahu alayhi wasallam) and I said these words.” He said, “Do you know what they mean?” I said, “Allah and his Messenger know best. “There is no power (to stay away) from the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala except by the protection of Allah, and there is no might to obey Allah Ta’ala but with the help of Allah Ta’ala.” (Bazzaar)

2.

O Allâh, I seek Your protection from being misguided or misguiding others; from slipping or causing others to slip; from oppressing others or being oppressed; from acting out of ignorance or acts of ignorance being done to me. (Abu Dawud. Also in Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah with slight variations)

Nabi (SallAllahu alayhi wasallam) would raise his gaze towards the sky when reciting this duâ.

These duaas are to be recited when leaving the home. If you ponder over the wording of the duaa, you will notice that it is ingrained with humility. Moreover, protection is sought from basically every evil thing that could happen to a person outside. Therefore, when a person will recire the duaa while considering the meaning, he will subconsciously register that he should not wrong another person, be ignorant or fall into sin.

Just as a person would wear a jersey, jacket or shawl to protect himself from the cold, he should recite this duaa to protect him from the spiritual evil elements that exist outside. This duaa also reminds a person that just like he should not wrong others and oppress outside the home, he should adopt the same behaviour indoors as well, i.e he should not wrong others, do evil etc.
